Fresh of last year’s hit Sinister, director Scott Derrickson is heading back to horror territory with Beware the Night, with mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer on board to oversee the frightful goings-on. Derrickson, who previously wrote and directed The Exorcism Of Emily Rose, penned Beware the Night with Exorcism writing partner Paul Boardman.

There are ghosts in Scary Movie 5, but there’s nothing in this latest entry in the spoof franchise to resurrect the ghosts of the superior films that preceded it. Read about it in my review of Scary Movie 5.

“NOOOOOOOOOOO!”

Marlon Wayans’ “found footage” horror spoof A Haunted House was the first surprise hit of 2013, earning $40 million on only a $2.5 million budget — despite its dubious quality. Although the film’s box office gross wasn’t earth-shattering, the ultra-low cost has earned it a sequel. Open Road Films has tentatively slated it for “winter 2014,” which presumably means January (the same month in which the first movie opened) or February rather than December. There’s no word on a plot yet, but you have to wonder how much more material within the found footage genre there is to mine for parody.

And the there was one. While The Following was renewed by Fox last month, The CW’s competing murderous cult TV series Cult has been dropped from the schedule. This shouldn’t come as a surprise, given its low ratings — even by The CW’s standards – and the fact that the network had already removed it from its original Tuesday night slot and banished it to Fridays. Seven episodes have aired — which is more than some networks (ahem, ABC) would’ve allowed before cancelation — and apparently there are no plans yet to air the remaining six. I watched the show, but I can’t say I’ll miss it terribly; it had a neat show-within-a-show concept, but the show that was within the show was pretty corny, and it was hard to believe that it would draw such a cult following.

We may never get to see a sequel to The Strangers, but there’s not one, but two similarly themed horror movies on the horizon set to hit theaters in wide release: The Purge and You’re Next. It’s not unusual for the bandwagoneers in Hollywood to have competing films with similar concepts coming out within months of each other — Armageddon/Deep Impact, Mission to Mars/Red Planet, Leviathan/Deep Star Six, Paul Blart: Mall Cop/Observe and Report, The Illusionist/The Prestige, Dante’s Peak/Volcano and currently, Olympus Has Fallen/White House Down, to name a few — and it seems that “masked home invaders” is the new hot topic to exploit.
