Bates Motel Renewed for Season 2

Bates Motel, one of two new midseason TV shows revolving around the early years of an infamous cinematic serial killer — the other being Hannibal — has been renewed for a second season by A&E. The series has delivered strong ratings for the cable channel — more so than Hannibal, which had a thoroughly mediocre debut for NBC last week. Like the first season, the second season of Bates Motel will be only 10 episodes long and will likely premiere in early 2014. What do you think? Is this good news?

First Full Trailer for Carrie Looks…Familiar

Not content with ruling the weekend with its remake Evil Dead, Sony (via its subsidiary Screen Gems) has unleashed the first full trailer for its upcoming remake of another beloved horror film: Carrie. It looks well made, but unfortunately for Sony, Evil Dead did such a good job of re-imagining the storyline with its own spin that Carrie so far looks uninspired by comparison. The trailer covers many of the familiar plot points from the 1976 Brian De Palma original — the crazy mother (Julianne Moore), the shower ordeal, being locked in the closet, the sympathetic teacher, the prom prank, the car showdown — lowering my expectations to the level of “competent but slavish.” On the bright side, we get to see Carrie (Chloe Grace Moretz) “Vader” her mom. We’ll see how it all turns out when Carrie hit theaters on October 18.

Who Says Remakes Suck? Evil Dead Movie Review

Evil Dead is a remake for horror fans who hate remakes…which seems like pretty much all of them. It remains true to the spirit of the original while crafting its own dark, gross, bodily fluid-covered identity, one that’s nearly impossible to resist. Read about it in my review of Evil Dead.

First, Norman Bates found his way onto our TV screens, and now it’s time for another legendary cinematic serial killer to hit the tube: Hannibal Lecter. Like Bates Motel, Hannibal is a prequel, this time detailing FBI agent Will Graham’s relationship with Hannibal Lecter before he discovered the good doctor was in fact a serial killer.
