In a summer marked by a string of blockbuster flops, The Conjuring further proved this past weekend that bigger isn’t always better. The modestly budgeted ($20 million) haunted house pic finished in first place at the box office, earning an estimated $41.5 million to easily beat blockbuster competition Red 2, R.I.P.D. and Turbo in their opening weekends.
