When any horror comedy comes out of the UK, it will inevitably be compared in many people’s minds to Shaun of the Dead, but the Irish film Grabbers actually has more in common with an American movie — Tremors — and like that film, it’s a monstrous good time. Read about it in my review of Grabbers.

Despite some mildly troubling signs — two new showrunners over the past year, ratings that peaked two seasons ago, a reduction in episodes from 12 to 10 — True Blood will be coming back for a seventh season. HBO has renewed the vampire TV show, which still consistently ranks amongst the 10 top-rated cable series. Season 7 of True Blood will premiere in the summer of 2014.

It's a very busy week of theatrical horror/suspense releases, with The Conjuring and R.I.P.D. opening wide and Evidence and Grabbers getting limited runs. Meanwhile, on home video, Evil Dead and Solomon Kane lead the way.

Despite a $190 million budget, predictions for Pacific Rim‘s opening take at the box office this past weekend were in the dismal $25 to $35 million range, which would put it on pace to earn the “bomb” status (at least domestically) with which films like White House Down and The Lone Ranger have already been branded this summer. Preliminary estimates, however, have Pacific Rim beating those expected numbers…but not by much. It’s estimated take this weekend was $38.3, which was good enough for only third place behind a pair of sequels: Despicable Me 2 and Grown Ups 2.

The older I get, the more I dislike big, effects-lade blockbuster movies, but Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim made me feel like a kid again, reinvigorating my sense of wonder at the monster-and-robot mayhem on screen. Read about it my review of Pacific Rim.
