Pacific Rim Exceeds Expectations, Still Finishes Third at Box Office

Despite a $190 million budget, predictions for Pacific Rim‘s opening take at the box office this past weekend were in the dismal $25 to $35 million range, which would put it on pace to earn the “bomb” status (at least domestically) with which films like White House Down and The Lone Ranger have already been branded this summer. Preliminary estimates, however, have Pacific Rim beating those expected numbers…but not by much. It’s estimated take this weekend was $38.3, which was good enough for only third place behind a pair of sequels: Despicable Me 2 and Grown Ups 2.
