I’m not going to pretend that the slasher movie Smiley some great piece of horror cinema — in fact, I’d wager that most genre fans dislike (if not vehemently hate) it — but I feel obliged to submit a counter viewpoint that goes beyond the admittedly mediocre execution of horror elements and cuts to the core of a film that is introspective, borderline existential and, dare I say, downright “deep.” Read about it in my review of Smiley, which opens today in select AMC Theaters.

Grave Encounters 2 may be the only sequel in history that was green-lighted more because of the popularity of its predecessor’s trailer than because of the popularity of the predecessor itself. What does that mean for this movie? Not much; just an interesting tidbit. Read about it in my review of Grave Encounters 2, which opens in a limited number of theaters in New York, Baltimore, Phoenix, Denver and San Diego on Friday, October 12, and is currently available on demand.

Sinister generated so much buzz that Summit bumped it from August to the Halloween season, where it will take on the latest entry in the reigning seasonal champ, the Paranormal Activity franchise. So, is it worth the hype? Yes…and sort of no. Read about it in my review of Sinister, which opens nationwide this Friday, October 12.

Recognizable names abound in The Barrens, the latest effort from director Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II through IV, Mother’s Day, 11-11-11) starring Stephen Moyer, Mia Kirshner, Erik Knudsen and Shawn Ashmore. It’s part The Shining, part monster movie centered around the legend of the Jersey Devil, but neither of those parts makes it a whole movie. Read about it in my review of The Barrens.

Truth or Die is the latest entry in the Bloody Disgusting Selects series -- which has long ceased providing theatrical exposure to indie horror movies and is now a direct-to-video line. The British film revolves around -- you guessed it -- a game of truth or dare that goes horribly awry, and the result is entertaining and well made, if not particularly memorable. Read about it in my review of Truth or Die.

It’s only been on for one episode, but 666 Park Avenue might already be in hot water — appropriate, given the show is about residents of an apartment building who sell their souls to Satan. Ratings for the premiere episode were mediocre at best and were even less than Pan Am earned for the network in that same time slot last year. Since Pan Am didn’t even last a full season, that’s not good news. Even worse, ABC hasn’t been patient with low-rated genre shows of late, with The River, The Gates, Happy Town and Eastwick all getting the axe after just a few episodes.
