A scene from
Evil Dead.

For those of you still holding out hope that the upcoming remake of The Evil Dead — now apparently titled simply Evil Dead — will continue in the campy horror-comedy vein of Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness, the new gruesome red-band trailer should clear up that confusion rather quickly. It might also help soothe the nerves of some fans of the original who were pessimistic about the concept of a remake, because it looks very promising. You’ve got to at least think that Sam Raimi, who directed the original and serves as producer on the remake, wouldn’t let anyone ruin the film that put his name on the map. We’ll find out when Evil Dead hits theaters on April 12, 2013.

Known more for ghost stories like Darkness and Fragile and zombie movies like REC and REC 2, Spanish director Jaume Balagueró mines the real world for frights in the thriller Sleep Tight, about a warped apartment concierge who determines to make the lives of his tenants miserable. Read about it in my review of Sleep Tight.

Essence Atkins and Marlon Wayans
in
A Haunted House.

As previously reported, comedian Marlon Wayans is going all "Scary Movie" on the Paranormal Activity franchise with a comedic spoof, and now we have not only the title -- the rather bland A Haunted House -- but also a trailer. It's apparent from the video that A Haunted House, which Wayans co-wrote, pokes fun not only at the Paranormal Activity films, but also The Devil Inside -- and perhaps even more of the "found footage" ilk. PA is obviously the primary target, however, as the plot revolves around a couple who moves into a new home and encounters a demonic presence. I couldn't help but chuckle at the trailer, but I'm still not sure if I was laughing with it or at it. I'll get a better idea when A Haunted House hits theaters on January 11.

It sounds like overkill, but it doesn't come as much of a surprise that there will be not one, but TWO Paranormal Activity movies in 2013. It's been known for several months that there will be a Latino-targeted "cousin" to the storyline in the PA franchise, but now there's official word that, despite a disappointing opening gross for PA 4, there will also be a Paranormal Activity 5. Deadline is reporting that, like the previous films, the fifth entry will open in October, while the Latino spinoff -- which was teased in an uneventful bumper after the credits in PA 4 -- will hit theaters in the spring.

In my review of Paranormal Activity 4, I speculated that the series had “jumped the shark” creatively — an opinion shared by critics and fans alike, given its 28% RottenTomatoes rating and “C” CinemaScore grade — but it appears that many viewers didn’t bother to even watch the movie before reaching this conclusion, as the film earned a disappointing $30.2 million at the box office in its opening weekend. That was easily good enough for the top spot, but it was a significant drop from Paranormal Activity 3, which last year set an October record with a $52.6 million opening. It’s also markedly off from Paranormal Activity 2, which opened with $40.7 million in 2010.

There’s never been a better time for horror television shows, and now TNT is jumping on the bandwagon, developing a series based on Dean Koontz’s Frankenstein books. Much like the recent report of the adaptation of Guillermo del Toro’s Strain books into a TV show, Frankenstein is also coming full circle, having initially been written as a potential TV series but ending up as only a 2004 made-for-TV movie on the USA network starring Vincent Perez and Parker Posey and directed by Marcus Nispel (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th). When it wasn’t picked up as a full series, Koontz turned the story into a series of books — five and counting.
