Asylum Blackout (previously known as The Incident) is a little English-language film from France/Belgium that's flown under the radar, but it's got oodles of talent behind it -- including star Rupert Evans (Hellboy), director Alexandre Courtès (who's helmed music videos for U2, The White Stripes and more), producers Roy Lee and Doug Davison (The Ring, The Grudge, The Strangers) and writer S. Craig Zahler (who has had a script top the esteemed Black List and has another with Michael Mann attached to direct). As such, it shouldn't be surprising that this movie about, well, a blackout in an asylum, has a lot of great stuff going for it. Read about it in my review of Asylum Blackout, which opens today in limited release and is also available on IFC on Demand and through the following digital outlets: SundanceNOW, iTunes, Amazon Streaming, XBOX Zune and Playstation Unlimited.

A month ago, it was revealed that Universal was working on a reboot of The Mummy, and now word comes that the studio is revisiting one of its not-quite-classic monster movies: the much-derided 2004 Hugh Jackman vehicle Van Helsing. This time around, though, Tom Cruise — not Jackman – is in line to star (and produce). There are few details beyond that, but let’s hope that this reboot has the same philosophy as the upcoming Mummy film: that is, focusing more on the dark, horror roots of the story rather than the effects-heavy blockbuster-styled action. I can’t say I’m optimistic.

Read about it in my review of Area 407, currently playing in limited theatrical release and on demand.
