Indie genre stalwart IFC Midnight's latest additions to its schedule are, as often happens, fairly last-minute in nature, but that doesn't make them any less intriguing. Asylum Blackout finds a group of slacker workers in an insane asylum forced to fight for survival when the inmates escape during a -- wait for it -- blackout. Meanwhile, Entrance is an LA-set thriller about a woman who becomes increasingly aware of an unseen menace stalking her. Asylum Blackout will be available in a limited number of theaters and on demand starting THIS FRIDAY, May 4, and Entrance will be similarly available in two weeks, on May 18.

Sam Raimi might be slowly erasing some of the good will he built up with the horror crowd through his Evil Dead series by venturing not once, but twice into the divisive realm of remakes. First, he began producing a reboot of his beloved Evil Dead, and now, he’s reportedly planning on heading the production of a remake of the classic ’80s ghost story Poltergeist.

You can tell that the pitch for The Raven was probably something like “Seven, set in the 19th Century, with Edgar Allan Poe int the Brad Pitt role.” As exciting and unique as that sounds, the final product is surprisingly generic. Read about it in my review of The Raven.

It was touch and go for a while, but fans of Fringe can finally rejoice: the show is returning for a fifth season. On the downside, it will definitely be the last season, and it will be only 13 episodes long (the previous four seasons boasted 20-23 episodes each). But at least fans can savor the show's last season, and the series will now be able to reach 100 episodes, the traditional threshold at which point a show becomes viable for $yndication. It remains to be seen whether Fringe will return in the fall or if, given its short run, it will be a midseason replacement.

A pair of notable names have signed on for the upcoming seasons of two eagerly anticipated shows, revealing some interesting details on what to expect when they premiere this fall. First, Chloe Sevigny (Boys Don’t Cry, Big Love) will appear in Season 2 of American Horror Story as a nymphomaniac named Shelly who will serve as “a foil for [Jessica] Lange’s character.” Last week, series co-creator Ryan Murphy revealed that Lange, who won an Emmy for her role in Season 1, will play a woman who runs a hospital for the criminally insane. (Because it’s an anthology series, returning AHS characters play different roles each season.) French actress Lizzie Brochere and singer Adam Levine were previously added to the cast, joining Season 1’s Lange, Zachary Quinto, Evan Peters,Sarah Paulson and Lily Rabe. American Horror Story is expected to return to FX in October.

Previously known as The Dibbuk Box, the horror movie The Possession -- about a girl who becomes possessed by a spirit (a "dibbuk") attached to an antique box -- has gone through not only multiple titles, but also multiple release dates before finally resting on August 31. Now, more than a year after it was initially announced, we finally get a peek at what the film -- and the box -- will look like in this first photo. Apart from the box, the "possessed girl in a white gown" has certainly been seen before, from The Exorcist to The Exorcism of Emily Rose to The Last Exorcism. Let's hope that the rest of The Possession can come up with something more original.

Given the fact that it’s been six years since Scary Movie 4 came out and that plans to release Scary Movie 5 earlier this spring were bumped all the way to 2013, I was beginning to wonder if there would ever be another entry in the horror spoof franchise. But now, it appears that production on Scary Movie 5 is finally ramping up, as Malcolm Lee has been hired to direct.
