Given her track record, you wouldn’t think any horror movie starring Tara Reid would be worth viewing, but The Fields is different. For one thing, Reid appears on screen for only 10 or 15 minutes (Cloris Leachman is more of the headliner.). For another, it doesn’t feature killer snakes or any creature with “Mega” in its name. Rather, it’s a slow-burning period piece (set in 1973) that focuses on mood and character dynamics, a refreshing change of pace that’s not without its flaws. Read about it in my review of The Fields.

Even if you don’t think The Cabin in the Woods was the best movie opening last weekend, surely it was the best horror-comedy opening last weekend…or was it? While all of the genre focus has been on Cabin over the past week, Detention quietly snuck into theaters with as much energy, innovation, style and intelligent humor as its bigger, more well-known competitor.
