Lucky McKee’s The Woman, the sequel to The Offspring (both based on Jack Ketchum books) about a man’s attempt to keep a wild cannibal woman captive, now has a release date from the Bloody Disgusting Selects series: October 14. The film caused a bit of a stir at Sundance this year, but despite the disturbing content, the new trailer shows quite a flair for quirky dark humor. For my money, McKee (May, Red, The Woods) has yet to miss, so I’m certainly looking forward to what he has to offer this time around.

House of Fallen is a low-budget, direct-to-video release starring C. Thomas Howell and Corbin Bernsen and doesn’t feature anything as spooky as the cover art intimates. In fact, it doesn’t feature much of anything beyond dialogue, dialogue and more dialogue. It’s admirably intelligent but perhaps would be better served if marketed as a supernatural drama. Read about it in my review of House of Fallen.

No really, THIS will be the last exorcism…unless it’s a hit. Again. Despite its title, The Last Exorcism is spawning a sequel. The low-budget documentary-style found-footage film was a surprise hit last summer, sending the the profitability-to-likelihood of a sequel ratio through the roof (Insidious, I’ve got my eye on you.). A script is being written, and production is scheduled to begin this fall.

Newly formed distributor FilmDistrict has already scored one of the scariest movies of the year with Insidious; can lightning strike twice for the company with another spooky house pic, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark? Short story: no. Long story: read about it in my review of Don't Be Afraid of the Dark.

There’s a movie called The Caller hitting select (read: very few) theaters this Friday — not that you’d know, because it hasn’t received any publicity and doesn’t even seem to have a website. Frankly, I don’t even know where it’s playing, but if you’re a horror fan, I suggest you actively search it out for a couple of reasons. For one, genre fans might be interested to find it stars Rachelle Lefevre (the original Victoria in the first two Twilight movies), Stephen Moyer (True Blood) and Lorna Raver (the villainess from Drag Me to Hell). Secondly, it’s just plain good. Great even.

We now have our first look at the trailers for two 3-D action-horror sequels scheduled for release early next year: Underworld: Awakening, starring Kate Beckinsale, and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, starring Nicolas Cage. Underworld is scheduled for release on January 20, while Ghost Rider hit screens on February 17.
