The Crow Remake Hits Snag with Lawsuit

The remake re-invention of The Crow that recently nabbed 28 Weeks Later director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo has hit a speed bump in the form of a lawsuit filed by The Weinstein Company, whose affiliated companies have released the four Crow films up to this point. TWC claims that it owns the distribution rights to any Crow remake and has sued to prevent Relativity Media, the company behind the proposed re-invention, to sell such rights to another company.

The Uruguayan film The Silent House (AKA La Casa Muda) has been one of the more buzz-worthy horror movies for a while, partially for the effectiveness of the movie and partially because it’s filmed in real time in a single shot. That’s 78 minutes without a single cut. You can get a sense of what that looks like in the new trailer.

Paramount Insurge Schedules First Micro-Budget Horror Movie: The Devil Inside

Buoyed by the success of its breakout hit Paranormal Activity, Paramount has formed the Insurge Pictures label to develop and release “micro-budget” films (original plans called for 10 to 20 films per year budgeted at no more than $100,000 each), the first of which has been announced as The Devil Inside.

Scream 4 Stabs Second Place at Box Office

The slasher sequel Scream 4 made an estimated $19.3 million at the box office this past weekend, good enough for second place behind the family film Rio. That would be a great opening for most horror movies, but for the established Scream franchise, it's the weakest start since the original, which played in less than half the number of theaters as Scream 4. The total is a significant drop from Scream 2 and Scream 3, each of which opened north of the $30 million mark. Final numbers are due on Tuesday.

A pair of promising horror movies featuring Oscar-caliber personnel are one step closer to hitting the big screen. The US distribution rights to House at the End of the Street, starring Academy Award nominee Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone), and The Bay, directed by Oscar winner Barry Levinson (Rain Man), were both snatched up this week.
