A funny thing happened on the way to my reviewing the Season 1 DVD of The Vampire Diaries: I found out that the show is actually pretty darn good. Well, the first season at least. I’d seen the first episode and bits and pieces of others but had never really gotten into the show, but given the chance to watch the season in its entirety, I was engrossed by the well-written storylines and surprised that the show doesn’t fall into the predictable teen melodrama mode of another unnamed teen vampire based-on-a-book series. Every year, there seems to be at least one surprise hit horror movie, and this year's might be The Last Exorcism, as opening weekend estimates have it taking in about $21.3 million, a good 50% higher than predictions. Early estimates have it eking out a slight victory over the heist film Takers, which also out-performed expectations, although the positions might flip-flop once final numbers come out on Monday.

This is one of the cooler projects I’ve heard of in a while. John Cusack announced on Friday via Twitter that he would be playing legendary 19th century author Edgar Allan Poe in a film titled The Raven.

Well, it looks like one thing will remain unscathed in the the eagerly anticipated, uber-violent slasher sequel Hatchet II: the movie itself. Starting October 1, AMC Theaters will be showing the film nationwide in uncut, unrated format, meaning the MPAA won’t be editing down the violence like it did with Hatchet. (We didn’t get to see the unrated version until it hit DVD.)
