Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, an epic fantasy/horror/western series of seven novels and several prequel comics that have spanned more than two decades, is receiving an equally epic adaptation. Universal is reporting that it has acquired the rights to the works and will be producing not one, but THREE films based on them — PLUS a television show.

Although it’s entering its sixth season, Supernatural still largely flies under peoples’ radar. After all, the ratings of a “hit” on The CW would get a show on the other four networks cancelled. But given a chance, you might discover what a small but rabid fanbase has known for the past five years: Supernatural is epic entertainment.

Although he’s become something of a punchline of late, I remain an M. Night Shyamalan apologist and am looking forward to the Night Chronicles trilogy of horror movies that he’s producing. The first, Devil, opens on September 17, while the second, Twelve Strangers, is in the works. And recently, Shyamalan let slip a juicy tease for the third film: it began as a script for a sequel to his superhero movie Unbreakable.

Barry Levinson, the acclaimed director of such films as Rain Man, The Natural, Diner and Good Morning, Vietnam, is reportedly going to “slum” in the horror realm (granted, he also directed Sphere) with a movie called The Bay. Screen Daily is referring to the pic, which was previously titled Isopod, as a “zombie eco-thriller,” with a plot that concerns “the aftermath of a viral outbreak on the Eastern Seaboard.”
