The Darren Aronofsky thriller Black Swan racked up an estimated $1.39 million in its opening weekend from only 18 theaters, for an eye-popping $77,444 per theater average. That's a record for Fox Searchlight and makes for a promising future for the film, which more than triples its number of screens this week. It's also good news for star Natalie Portman's Oscar chances, since the awards show tends to celebrate art house pics that break through into the mainstream.

Bucking conventional movie release strategy, the upcoming apocalyptic horror movie Vanishing on 7th Street will be available on demand to home viewers — on January 7, 2011 — before hitting theaters (in limited release) on February 18. This isn’t a new strategy for Magnet Releasing, which has handled past films like The House of the Devil and Survival of the Dead in a similar manner.

Well before it was released, Darren Aronofsky’s thriller Black Swan received a truckload of buzz online due to reports of a love scene between stars Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis. While that scene does occur, the movie is more than that; it’s a kinetic exploration of the nature obsession and the schism between fantasy and reality, a lush showcase for symbolism and the dark mysteries inherent in the recesses of the mind… Oh, who am I kidding? Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis make out and stuff. Go see it. Read about it in my review of Black Swan.

It hasn’t gotten the publicity that The Human Centipede received earlier this year, but Victim, another IFC release, features a similarly unhinged mad scientist type conducting a torturous experiment that is arguably every bit as twisted in concept as the infamous anatomical eccentricities of Centipede. It wasn’t well received, but The Wolfman was one of the highest-grossing horror movies of the year, and it’s making its TV debut this week on Saturday, December 4, at 10:00 PM ET/PT on Cinemax. Also premiering this week is the first — and for my money, the best — of the Red Riding trilogy, 1974, airing on Sunday, November 28, at 10:00 PM ET/PT on the Sundance Channel.
