The geek shall inherit the earth — or at least the horror/suspense genre — in a pair of upcoming films from Magnolia Pictures. In The Perfect Host, receiving a limited theatrical release on July 1 (currently on demand), David Hyde Pierce (Frasier) plays out of character as a seemingly mild-mannered dinner host who turns out to be quite the opposite when a bank robber on the lamb tries to use his place as a hideout. The upcoming remake of Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs now has a poster, and it's...pretty much the same as the original's iconic poster. You'd think the filmmakers would want to avoid direct comparisons to such a revered film as much as possible, but then again, you'd think they'd avoid doing a cheesy Photoshop paste job of Alexander Skarsgard in James Marsden's broken lens. (If it's broken, why is there a reflection? Oh well.) We'll see on September 16 whether the film itself is also a hollow imitation of the original.

Casting for World War Z, the big-screen adaptation of the 2006 novel World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War is taking shape nicely. With Brad Pitt long attached to star, Matthew Fox (Lost) and Ed Harris (Needful Things) have reportedly been added to the $125 million production about a realistic yet fictional (Does that need to be said?) global conflict against a zombie menace.
