One of the more unique upcoming horror movies is an endeavor from Magnet Releasing and the newly formed Drafthouse Films, the film distribution arm of the renowned Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. The ABCs of Death is a mega-anthology with 26 short films from 26 up-and-coming directors -- some better known than others -- each taking a different letter of the alphabet and telling a story of death via something beginning with that letter. Twenty-five of the directors have been named (see below), and the 26th could be you!

The Final Destination was supposed to be the end of the Final Destination franchise, but when it became a surprise hit (despite being a terrible movie), New Line green lighted another sequel, so if Final Destination 5 underperforms at the box office — as it did this weekend, pulling in an estimated $18.4 million — does this make it the “final” Final Destination? That remains to be seen; $18 million is a hardly a paltry sum, but it’s far below the $27.4 million opening of The Final Destination. Plus, this is the first of the sequels to have a smaller opening than its predecessor. In fact, Final Destination 5‘s tally was smaller than even Final Destination 3‘s, despite the increased 3-D ticket prices. (An estimated 75% of FD5‘s gross was from 3-D ticket sales, the highest 3D-to-2D ratio of the summer amongst major releases.) Final numbers are due late Monday.

Not surprising but welcome news: HBO has renewed its hit vampire TV series True Blood for a fifth season. The show’s fourth season is currently enjoying great success, consistent ranking (except for the ill-fated decision to make the second episode available online before it aired, which dropped ratings almost 50%) amongst the top-rated cable series on television. True Blood will return next summer (presumably June) for another 12 episodes. Meanwhile, we’re already past the half-way point (!) for the current season, which concludes on September 11.

Well, the Dark Tower adaptation(s) might be no more, but another Stephen King epic is inching closer to hitting the big screen. According to HitFix, director David Yates — who helmed the last four films in the Harry Potter series — and writer Steve Kloves – who wrote all but one of the movies — are close to signing on for the previously announced movie version of The Stand. According to the report, the adaptation of the apocalyptic story of good versus evil will, like the Harry Potter films, be a multi-pic event.
