Death Knell? Final Destination 5 Dies at Box Office

The Final Destination was supposed to be the end of the Final Destination franchise, but when it became a surprise hit (despite being a terrible movie), New Line green lighted another sequel, so if Final Destination 5 underperforms at the box office — as it did this weekend, pulling in an estimated $18.4 million — does this make it the “final” Final Destination? That remains to be seen; $18 million is a hardly a paltry sum, but  it’s far below the $27.4 million opening of The Final Destination. Plus, this is the first of the sequels to have a smaller opening than its predecessor. In fact, Final Destination 5‘s tally was smaller than even Final Destination 3‘s, despite the increased 3-D ticket prices. (An estimated 75% of FD5‘s gross was from 3-D ticket sales, the highest 3D-to-2D ratio of the summer amongst major releases.) Final numbers are due late Monday.
