If It’s Black Friday, It Must Be a Chopping Mall Remake

The pace of horror remakes over the past decade has slowed of late, largely because most of the major fright flicks have already been revisited. Thus, when a new remake is announced, it tends to be of more obscure horror movies…like Chopping Mall. Remake rights to the 1986 film — about malfunctioning mall security robots who on a killing spree — have been purchased by Robert Hall, the makeup effects guru-turned-director responsible for the two Laid to Rest movies. As with those films, Hall will write, produce and direct, with shooting set to begin in the spring of 2012.

Cars made out of body parts. A baby wielded as a mace. Chainsaw swords. Zombies with antlers. And look, it's that crazy lady from Audition! Welcome to the world of Helldriver, a movie that could only come from Japan. Read about it in my review of the DVD/Blu-ray of Helldriver, available starting today.

Dexter Renewed for Two More Seasons

It’s time to be thankful, Dexter fans, and not just because it’s Thanksgiving week. After some tense negotiations (at least, for fans), Michael C. Hall has signed on for two more years of the Showtime serial killer show. Like the first six seasons, seasons 7 and 8 will consist of 12 episodes each. The downside: they will, according to Showtime prez David Nevins, “likely” be the show’s swan song. As a fan, it will be sad to see the show go, but eight years is a great run, and I’d be intrigued to see how the writers choose to close out Dex’s killing spree.
