We’ve got new pics from Underworld Awakening and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, plus a first look at Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (right, via Entertainment Weekly) and the new poster for the Joss Whedon-penned The Cabin in the Woods. Hansel & Gretel might look a tad like Van Helsing, but given it’s directed by Dead Snow‘s Tommy Wirkola, I’m holding out hope that it will be quite a bit edgier.

Ridley Scott’s is-it-or-isn’t-it-an-Alien-prequel Prometheus doesn’t hit theaters until next summer, but a bootleg copy of the first trailer leaked online this week, and despite the poor video quality, I’d be remiss if I didn’t say it looks fraggin’ awesome. Although Scott and company have downplayed the Alien association somewhat, you’ll probably recognize the same stark title sequence and eerie sonar-like sound in the new trailer that was used in the trailer for the original film. Prometheus stars Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, Idris Elba and Guy Pearce and hits theaters on June 8, 2012 — more than six months from now. Sigh.

January 3:
- Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark: Guy Pearce and Katie Holmes encounter malevolent creatures in this Guillermo Del Toro production.
- Red: Werewolf Hunter: In this SyFy adaptation of the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale (which predates the similarly themed Grimm), the descendants of Red Riding Hood have become werewolf hunters.
- Shark Night: A group of college kids run (or swim) into sharks that have been unleashed in a Louisiana lake.

The pace of horror remakes over the past decade has slowed of late, largely because most of the major fright flicks have already been revisited. Thus, when a new remake is announced, it tends to be of more obscure horror movies…like Chopping Mall. Remake rights to the 1986 film — about malfunctioning mall security robots who on a killing spree — have been purchased by Robert Hall, the makeup effects guru-turned-director responsible for the two Laid to Rest movies. As with those films, Hall will write, produce and direct, with shooting set to begin in the spring of 2012.
