Hot on the heels of Sony announcing its pick-up of the remake of the 1981 cult hit The Evil Dead, the studio has set an official release date: April 12, 2013. That’s not as close as some might have hoped (Halloween 2012 had been floated as a possibility), but given the remake had been rumored for years, another 16 months doesn’t seem so bad.

This week, the two-night Stephen King adaptation Bag of Bones airs on A&E (Sunday, December 11 and Monday, December 12 at 9:00 PM ET/PT), while Red Riding Hood (Saturday, December 17 at 8:00 PM ET/PT on HBO) and Vanishing on 7th Street (Saturday, December 17 at 9:00 PM ET/PT on Showtime Beyond) make their TV debuts.

The upcoming adaptation of the bestselling novel Horns by Joe Hill (Stephen King’s son) — about a man who inexplicably grows horns out of his head — has landed a director well versed in the horror genre: Alexandre Aja. Aja has made a name for himself helming gory fright flicks like The Hills Have Eyes, Piranha 3D and Mirrors (all remakes), plus High Tension back in his native France, in addition to writing and producing P2 and the upcoming Maniac remake.

Unfortunately, the recent legacy of the 1973 cult favorite The Wicker Man has been dominated by the so-bad-it’s-good 2006 remake starring an over-caffeinated Nicolas Cage. Now, Robin Hardy, the director of the original film, has returned to set things straight with The Wicker Tree, an adaptation of the novel Cowboys for Christ he wrote in — wait for it — 2006. (The book came out before the remake, thus blowing the theory that Hardy was so scarred by the movie that he sat down and pounded out a novel.)
