Jennifer Lynch’s latest directorial effort stars a sweaty Vincent D’Onofrio and features rape, murder, child abuse, kidnapping, slavery and a touch of incest, but otherwise, it’s the feel-good film of the year. Read about it in my review of Chained.

The latest family-friendly horror flick from director Joe Dante (Gremlins, The ‘Burbs), The Hole was shot back in 2008-09 and was released in most parts of the world in 2010 and 2011, but the US is just now getting its hands on the film, which plays a bit like The Gate meets House…but not as good as either. Anyway, it hits home video (DVD/Blu-ray/VOD) next week, but if you want to see it on the big screen, you can do so in Los Angeles and select cities in Georgia (Morrow, Kennesaw, Lawrenceville, Decatur) starting today. Read more in my review of the DVD of The Hole.

Earlier this year, plans got underway for a “dark, scary” reboot of the Mummy franchise, and now the plans are getting firmer, with Deadline reporting of the hiring of Len Wiseman to direct the film. This will be a return to horror (theoretically) for Wiseman, who veered off into action with Total Recall and Live Free or Die Hard after helming the first two Underworld movies. Wiseman is a fine director, but given the Underworld movies are action-horror hybrids, this doesn’t fill me with confidence that the new Mummy will indeed be the return to its horror roots that it’s claimed to be. We’ll see when it hits the big screen — which is tentatively targeted for the summer of 2014.
