Underworld Director Signs on for Mummy Reboot

Earlier this year, plans got underway for a “dark, scary” reboot of the Mummy franchise, and now the plans are getting firmer, with Deadline reporting of the hiring of Len Wiseman to direct the film. This will be a return to horror (theoretically) for Wiseman, who veered off into action with Total Recall and Live Free or Die Hard after helming the first two Underworld movies. Wiseman is a fine director, but given the Underworld movies are action-horror hybrids, this doesn’t fill me with confidence that the new Mummy will indeed be the return to its horror roots that it’s claimed to be. We’ll see when it hits the big screen — which is tentatively targeted for the summer of 2014.
