Move over, The Devil Inside, we have a new candidate for worst wide-release horror movie of 2012. It turns out there's a reason Warner Brothers decided to roll The Apparition out in only 800 theaters. Simply put, The Apparition = Paranormal Activity + The Grudge + Poltergeist - everything that made those movies good. Read about it in my review of The Apparition.

It’s that time of year again… Here’s a butt-load of newly announced DVD/Blu-ray release dates for the upcoming Halloween season (and beyond):
October 2:
- Chained: Vincent D’Onofrio, Julia Ormand, Gina Phillips and Jake Weber star in director Jennifer Lynch’s tale of a young boy who is kidnapped and groomed by a serial killer.
- Dark Shadows: The 248th Johnny Depp-Tim Burton collaboration updates the cult vampire soap opera with a comedic twist.
- Killjoy Goes to Hell: The fourth entry in the killer clown franchise finds Killjoy on trial in Hell for failing to kill his intended victim.
- Red Lights: Cillian Murphy and Sigourney Weaver are professional debunkers who have their work cut out for them when a legendary psychic (Robert De Niro) comes out of retirement.

Still looking for a breakthrough hit outside of the Saw franchise, writer-director Darren Lynn Bousman (Repo! The Genetic Opera, Mother’s Day, 11-11-11) probably won’t be getting it with his latest effort, The Barrens. That’s because the film will forego theaters (technically, you can request it via the Tugg service) and head straight to home video (DVD, Blu-ray and VOD) on October 9. The film stars True Blood‘s Stephen Moyer as a father who may or may not be driven nuts by the Jersey Devil when his family goes on a camping trip. Mia Kirshner and Erik Knudsen also appear. The trailer looks competent enough — like an outdoorsy riff on The Shining — but creatively speaking, it appears to be a bit of a step backward for Bousman. We’ll see when The Barrens releases in October.

The Tall Man isn’t likely to cause the controversy of director Pascal Laugier’s previous film, the graphic, gory Martyrs, but like that movie, it’s gutsy, unpredictable and polarizing. Read about it in my review of The Tall Man, which is currently playing on demand and gets a limited theatrical run starting August 31.

Despite distribution from a major studio like Warner Brothers, the upcoming film The Apparition is -- according to Box Office Mojo and The Numbers -- opening this Friday on only 800 screens. That figure is only about a third of what you'd expect from a major-studio genre release -- WB's Chernobyl Diaries, for instance, openend in May on over 2,400 screens -- so you have to wonder if the studio doesn't have much confidence in the movie. After all, it was previously bumped almost a full year from its original September 2011 release date. Warner Brothers may also be a bit horror-leery, given Chernobyl Diaries didn't do much at the box office and the $80 million domestic gross by Dark Shadows (which opened in a whopping 3,755 theaters) has been underwhelming by summer blockbuster standards. We'll see how it works out for the studio -- at least there isn't much competition opening this weekend -- but hopefully this isn't the start of a horror downsizing trend.

British ghost story The Awakening opened this past weekend on 70 screens — a respectable number, given many limited releases top out at less than five theaters –but it managed to pull in only an estimated $94,400. That’s a per-screen average of only about $1,350 — or less than a hit like Madagascar 3 made in its 11th week in release. It’s unfortunate that such a strong film didn’t reach more people, but rare is the limited-release flick that generates enough of an audience to breach the attention of the mainstream. Oh well, there’s always home video (no date yet, but probably by the end of year).

With its limited distribution, the Irish horror movie Citadel will likely get little notice when it opens on October 26 opposite Silent Hill: Revelation and a week after the juggernaut known as Paranormal Activity 4, but it’s one of my more eagerly anticipated films of the year. It’s about an agoraphobic man who must venture outside to save his family from a (potentially supernatural) hooded gang, and won the Midnighter Audience Award at this year’s SXSW Film Festival, so at the very least, it’s a crowd pleaser. Check out the new trailer.
