The Awakening DOA at Box Office

British ghost story The Awakening opened this past weekend on 70 screens — a respectable number, given many limited releases top out at less than five theaters –but it managed to pull in only an estimated $94,400. That’s a per-screen average of only about $1,350 — or less than a hit like Madagascar 3 made in its 11th week in release. It’s unfortunate that such a strong film didn’t reach more people, but rare is the limited-release flick that generates enough of an audience to breach the attention of the mainstream. Oh well, there’s always home video (no date yet, but probably by the end of year).
