Completed way back in 2009, The Hole seemed to drop down a hole distribution-wise for three years, but now it will finally crawl out to see the light of day. It will hit DVD, Blu-ray and on-demand services on October 2, with a nominal (read: limited) theatrical release the week before, on September 28.

The movie formerly known as Wrong Turn 5: Bloodbath is now titled Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines, and now it has an official release date. As expected, it’s going straight to DVD/Blu-ray, and not surprisingly, it will arrive in time for Halloween: October 23. Judging from the apparent success of the previous films in the series (According to the promotional folks at 20th Century Fox, the Wrong Turn franchise — at least, parts 2 through 4 — is the most popular direct-to-video horror franchise in history. Who knew?), Wrong Turn 5 probably won’t be the last you’ll hear from everyone’s favorite inbred backwoods cannibal clan.

If, like me, you were disappointed by The Apparition, consider checking out another woman-menaced-by-supernatural-entity flick, Lovely Molly, a spooky and challenging little film from the co-creator of The Blair Witch Project that may not have the slickness or star power of The Apparition, but that actually delivers the creepy goods. Read about it in my review of Lovely Molly.

As expected, given its meager 800-screen release, The Apparition was barely a blip on the box office charts this past wekend, earning only an estimated $2.95 million -- good enough for only 12th place. Frankly, though, Warner Brothers missed an opportunity to get a top-3 finish in what was easily the smallest-grossing box office weekend of the year so far. Given the same per-screen average, if The Apparition had opened on 2,550 screens -- a realistic number for a major-studio genre film -- it could've boasted a second-place finish that the marketing folks could've spun in their favor. No doubt the similarly-themed The Possession will perform better when it opens wide (genuinely wide, as in 2,700-plus screens) this coming weekend.
