The Apparition Disappears at Box Office

As expected, given its meager 800-screen release, The Apparition was barely a blip on the box office charts this past wekend, earning only an estimated $2.95 million — good enough for only 12th place. Frankly, though, Warner Brothers missed an opportunity to get a top-3 finish in what was easily the smallest-grossing box office weekend of the year so far. Given the same per-screen average, if The Apparition had opened on 2,550 screens — a realistic number for a major-studio genre film — it could’ve boasted a second-place finish that the marketing folks could’ve spun in their favor. No doubt the similarly-themed The Possession will perform better when it opens wide (genuinely wide, as in 2,700-plus screens) this coming weekend.
