At last, Ridley Scott’s Prometheus is here, and I know what you’re wondering: is it or isn’t it a prequel to Alien? Well, I’d call it a tangential prequel, one that has enough of the familiar horror elements from that film and its sequels to satisfy fans but nestled inside a more introspective (and visually stunning) sci-fi mystery not unlike an interplanetary episode of The X-Files. Read about it in my review of Prometheus.

Another week, another horror/suspense movie being adapted into a TV show. With upcoming series being based on The Exorcist, Hellraiser, Psycho, Dracula and the Silence of the Lambs franchise (two shows for that one), now there's word that MTV is developing a series based on the popular Scream films. TV Line has few details at this early stage -- a pilot hasn't even been written yet -- including the extent of involvement (or lack thereof) of original writer Kevin Williamson and director Wes Craven, but you have to wonder if, given the disappointing performance of Scream 4, plans for a fifth and sixth movie will be scrapped in favor of the small screen.

Say you're trying to escape from a homicidal maniac, and you grab a heavy urn full of ashes. If you said B, you've got the cockeyed thought process necessary to enjoy Rogue River. Congratulations! Read about it in my review of Rogue River.

It opened in fewer than 100 theaters, but Piranha 3DD still performed relatively poorly at the box office this past weekend, earning only an estimated $179,000. To be fair, the $2,000-per-screen average was likely hurt by the fact that the film was released to on-demand outlets on the same day, meaning fewer people felt the urgency to see it in a theater. On the other hand, the appeal of seeing it in 3-D on a big screen should’ve drawn in viewers, and inflated 3-D ticket prices no doubt bumped up the total.

A recent Variety article about distributor Constantin Film purchasing the German rights to Scary Movie 5 and Eli Roth's announced The Green Inferno has revealed more details about both films than we had previously known. First, it turns out The Green Inferno will be Roth's attempt to resurrect the grisly Italian cannibal exploitation movies of the late '70s and '80s. (Indeed, the 1988 movie Natura Contro was released internationally as both Cannibal Holocaust II and...wait for it...The Green Inferno.) The story "follows an idealistic student and a group of naive do-gooders who are captured by cannibalistic Indios after their plane crash lands in the Peruvian jungle." Details about Scary Movie 5's plot are less concrete, but according to Variety, some of the films the spoof will poke fun at this time around include Black Swan, Paranormal Activity, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and 127 Hours.
