Piranha 3DD Sinks at Box Office

It opened in fewer than 100 theaters, but Piranha 3DD still performed relatively poorly at the box office this past weekend, earning only an estimated $179,000. To be fair, the $2,000-per-screen average was likely hurt by the fact that the film was released to on-demand outlets on the same day, meaning fewer people felt the urgency to see it in a theater. On the other hand, the appeal of seeing it in 3-D on a big screen should’ve drawn in viewers, and inflated 3-D ticket prices no doubt bumped up the total.
