Not having seen footage from Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, it was hard to tell if the Johnny Depp-led adaptation of the classic vampire TV show would be a horror movie with comedy overtones (like the Burton-Depp Sleepy Hollow) or a comedy with horror overtones (like the big-screen version of The Addams Family). Now, with the release of the first trailer for the film, we have our answer: it’s the latter. Despite the apparent lack of horror thrills, though, Dark Shadows looks like a fun fish-out-of-water tale with Deep as a 200-year-old vampire trying to adapt to life in the 1970s. Look for it in theaters starting May 11.

After the recent release of a trailer, it seemed like the announcement of a release date for the long-delayed sequel Piranha 3DD should be imminent, and now we have it. ShockTillYouDrop is reporting that it will hit theaters on June 1. The bad news: the LA Times reports that the film air in theaters and on video-on-demand simultaneously, meaning the theatrical release will likely be limited in scope.

Imagine if Superbad starred a couple of zombies, and you get the idea behind Deadheads, an adolescent “zom com” about a young zombie looking for love that’s not as funny as Superbad but has way more head shots. Read about it in my review of Deadheads, available now on DVD.

Given we had yet to hear anything about casting or a shooting schedule, I suppose it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that Halloween 3D, the third film in the rebooted slasher franchise (and the first not to involve director Rob Zombie), has been postponed. To when, though, is anyone’s guess, as it now has no official release date.

A few weeks ago, up-and-coming starlet Lily Collins was in line to star in the Evil Dead remake, only to drop out. But producers have wasted little time in refiling not only her role, but also much of the cast. Jane Levy (Suburgatory, pictured) was hired to fill Collins’ lead role — a recovering addict who retreats to a cabin in the woods to detox — while Shiloh Fernandez (Red Riding Hood, Deadgirl) will play her brother. Rounding out the cast (so far) are Lou Taylor Pucci (Carriers), Jessica Lucas (Cloverfield, Amusement) and Elizabeth Blackmore (Legend of the Seeker). There’s plenty of time for the rest of the personnel to be decided; The Evil Dead doesn’t hit theaters until April 12, 2013.

In an era in which Hollywood movie budgets have risen exponentially, the recent success of low-cost “found footage” films like Paranormal Activity, The Last Exorcism and The Devil Inside (triggering, in turn, non-horror flicks like Chronicle and Project X) have made low-tech, micro-budget fare the hottest ticket in town. The lure of these low-cost, high-reward projects is so strong that it can even bring abandoned movies back from the dead.
