The best zombie movie of the year might not be a movie at all, but rather a miniseries. Dead Set is a five-episode British show that aired in the UK in 2008 but is just now making it to the States, via IFC. The series begs the intriguing question of what would happen if a zombie epidemic broke out during the filming of Britain’s Big Brother reality TV show. The nature of fame, voyeurism and intestinal consumption are all explored in this thrilling — and surprisingly straight-faced — zombie epic.

It’s an appropriate time, seeing as how January has become fertile ground (or, to pessimists, “dumping ground”) for studios’ horror efforts in recent years.

TV Movie Highlights of the Week: The Lovely Bones, Home Movie, After Dark Horrorfest

Home Movie

As Halloween approaches, several horror/suspense movies make their debuts this week. The most high-profile is the somewhat disappointing The Lovely Bones (Saturday, October 16 at 8:00 PM ET/PT on HBO), while two solid entries from this year’s After Dark Horror FestThe Final (7:00 PM ET/PT) and Kill Theory (9:00 PM ET/PT) premiere that same night on Syfy. The real highlight in my book, though, is the lesser-known Home Movie, an awesome blend of killer kid and POV/”found footage” sub-genres that airs on Friday, October 15 at 2:00 AM ET/PT on IFC.
