Shark Night Bites the Big One, Apollo 18 Alienates the Box Office

Continuing the lackluster box office run of 2011’s late summer horror films, Shark Night 3D and Apollo 18 pulled in an estimated $8.7 million and $8.6 million, respectively, this past weekend. On the heels of the disappointing openings of Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, Fright Night and Final Destination 5, this marks one of the rare years in recent memory without a breakout late summer horror hit (Last year, it was The Last Exorcism; in 2009, it was The Final Destination; in 2007, it was Halloween.). On the bright side, none of the horror flicks this year have had particularly high budgets — Priest came closest, with $60 million — a big reason why plenty of horror movies will continue to be made regardless of modest box office returns.
