It should come as no surprise that Transylmania is an awful movie. It’s called Transylmania, for goodness’ sake. That sort of witty wordplay should be an indication of the level of humor involved with this Dorm Daze sequel. Read about it in my review of Transylmania.

Those of you who can’t get enough of the Twilight movies might end up getting more than you thought: that is, five movies instead of four. Author Stephenie Meyer has long stated that she thinks that the story in Breaking Dawn, the fourth (and so far, final) book in the series is so long that it’s hard to imagine it being adapted into a single movie, and it appears that Summit Entertainment is starting to agree with her. (And really, the Twilight films are the studio’s meal ticket right now, so any extra cash it can squeeze out of them will go a long way to keeping it afloat until it can find the next big thing.)

This week finds slim pickings horror-wise, as the horror-comedy Transylmania hits theaters, while the light slate of DVDs is led by the Brittany Murphy direct-to-video offering Deadline and a box set of Silent Night, Deadly Night movies.

The latest effort from erratic director Joel Schumacher (The Lost Boys, Flatliners, The Number 23) has had an equally erratic history. Initially known as Creek and then Town Creek, Blood Creek was slated for a wide theatrical release, but along the way, creative differences, rewrites and behind-the-scenes wrangling led Lionsgate to surreptitiously dump the film into a few second-run theaters in September (a strategy eerily similar to their treatment of Midnight Meat Train) — so few, in fact, that its release was barely reported and its box office take was essentially nil. Thus, the upcoming January 19 DVD release is basically Schumacher’s first straight-to-video feature film.

This week is ripe with horror/suspense premieres:
- Obsessed: It’s Beyonce vs. Ali Larter in the foxy boxing match of the year this Saturday, December 5, at 9:00 PM on Starz.
- Transsiberian: This Hitchcockian thriller from director Brad Anderson (Session 9) stars Woody Harrelson and Emily Mortimer as American tourists intertwined in a murder mystery while on a train to Moscow. It airs on Saturday, December 5, at 9:00 PM on Showtime.
- While She Was Out: Kim Basinger fights off punk kids with her trusty toolbox. It airs on Friday, December 4, at 4:45 AM on Encore Mystery.

It’s not official, but Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer seems to be optimistic that: A) a sequel will happen, B) the stars will return and C) it will be shot in…wait for it…3-D! Although I think the 3-D horror thing is starting to be overdone, the fun, stylish flair of Zombieland does seem to fit this format pretty well. If it happens, a 2011 date seems logical.

We have our first live-action look at what could be the next vaguely horror-themed tween sensation (following something called New Moon): Beastly, a modern-day adaptation of Beauty and the Beast with no Ron Perlman in sight (that’s a joke, tweens; look it up). Here’s a teaser trailer, along with some new photos for the movie, which opens on July 30, 2010.

A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned something called Howling: Reborn, and now we have a few more (disturbing) details. Although some sites are referring to it as a remake, Variety is reporting that Reborn is more of a “re-launch” of the series (translation: a sequel that is removed from the previous films by a decade or so) and that it’s being helmed by a studio exec-turned-first-time director (Joe Nimziki) and produced by a pair of indie film vets — Joel Kastelberg (Kicking and Screaming; not the Will Ferrell one) and Etchie Stroh (Cookie’s Fortune) — who’ve never attempted a horror movie before.
