Take a deep breath, zombie fanboys; it’s apparently going to happen. Natalie Portman will fight zombies — though probably not in a Padmé Amidala midriff-baring white jumpsuit. She’s set to star in (and produce, alongside The Box‘s Richard Kelly, amongst others) the upcoming adaptation of the trendsetting “mashup” novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, a spin on the Jane Austen classic that places the story in an alternate reality in which zombies (and apparently a ninja or two) roam the countryside. Portman will play the main protagonist, Elizabeth Bennet. No word on a release date, but since the actress is currently filming the thriller Black Swan and then seems to be committed to the superhero flick Thor, I wouldn’t expect PaPaZ until 2011.

2009 was a good year for horror and suspense movies — more so amongst smaller releases, but even with films that received a wide theatrical distribution, there were some entertaining offerings. Here are my choices for best wide theatrical horror movies of 2009.

Just because there’s no major theatrical release this week doesn’t mean that there aren’t any quality releases. The Skeptic and Home Movie in particular feature big-name talent (the former Tim Daly and Zoe Saldana and the latter Adrian Pasdar), good production value and solid entertainment value — which is more than you can say about many movies released in theaters. Check out all of the new horror/suspense releases for the week.

Slowly but surely we’re getting little peeks at what the new Freddy Krueger (Jackie Earle Haley) will look like in the upcoming remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street. So far, he looks…dark and shadowy. Check out the pics before the movie hits theaters on April 30, 2010.

The Sundance Film Festival announced its 2010 lineup this week, including its annual Park City at Midnight showcase of horror, suspense and all things that don’t fall under the artsy-fartsy umbrella of the rest of the fest. The horror/suspense outings this time around sound very promising — including Ryan Reynolds’ intriguing Buried (pictured), in which the star is essentially the only person in the film, trapped in a box for 90 minutes or so. We’ll see if he gets out alive when the Sundance Film Festival runs January 21-31, 2010.
