Shark Night Bites the Big One, Apollo 18 Alienates the Box Office

Continuing the lackluster box office run of 2011’s late summer horror films, Shark Night 3D and Apollo 18 pulled in an estimated $8.7 million and $8.6 million, respectively, this past weekend. On the heels of the disappointing openings of Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, Fright Night and Final Destination 5, this marks one of the rare years in recent memory without a breakout late summer horror hit (Last year, it was The Last Exorcism; in 2009, it was The Final Destination; in 2007, it was Halloween.). On the bright side, none of the horror flicks this year have had particularly high budgets — Priest came closest, with $60 million — a big reason why plenty of horror movies will continue to be made regardless of modest box office returns.

Indie Creature Aims to Take a Bite Out of Box Office

Sid Sheinberg, the 76-year-old former President and Chief Operating Officer of MCA who, via MCA’s Universal division, oversaw such legendary monster movies as Jaws and Jurassic Park, is going the decidedly un-studio route with his latest monster movie, Creature. Sheinberg’s production company The Bubble Factory produced the flick — about an alligator man roaming the Louisiana swamps — and finding resistance from studios regarding distribution, he decided to distribute the film himself. The result is impressively wide, with Creature opening September 9 reportedly on 1,500 screens in the top 20 US markets.
