The Possession.

Previously known as The Dibbuk Box, the horror movie The Possession -- about a girl who becomes possessed by a spirit (a "dibbuk") attached to an antique box -- has gone through not only multiple titles, but also multiple release dates before finally resting on August 31. Now, more than a year after it was initially announced, we finally get a peek at what the film -- and the box -- will look like in this first photo. Apart from the box, the "possessed girl in a white gown" has certainly been seen before, from The Exorcist to The Exorcism of Emily Rose to The Last Exorcism. Let's hope that the rest of The Possession can come up with something more original.

Given the fact that it’s been six years since Scary Movie 4 came out and that plans to release Scary Movie 5 earlier this spring were bumped all the way to 2013, I was beginning to wonder if there would ever be another entry in the horror spoof franchise. But now, it appears that production on Scary Movie 5 is finally ramping up, as Malcolm Lee has been hired to direct.

Given her track record, you wouldn’t think any horror movie starring Tara Reid would be worth viewing, but The Fields is different. For one thing, Reid appears on screen for only 10 or 15 minutes (Cloris Leachman is more of the headliner.). For another, it doesn’t feature killer snakes or any creature with “Mega” in its name. Rather, it’s a slow-burning period piece (set in 1973) that focuses on mood and character dynamics, a refreshing change of pace that’s not without its flaws. Read about it in my review of The Fields.
