It will probably get about one percent of the press of The Woman in Black, but for my money, the low-budget film The Pact — which gets a limited theatrical run starting Friday, July 6 and is currently available on demand on IFC Midnight cable VOD and digital outlets (SundanceNOW, iTunes, Amazon Streaming, XBOX Zune, Playstation Unlimited) — is a scarier, better executed ghost story with a more intriguing mystery. Has the long-gestating remake/reboot of Child’s Play morphed into a sequel? And more shocking, a direct-to-video sequel? Moviehole is reporting that a fifth sequel in the Child’s Play franchise, dubbed Curse of Chucky, will begin shooting in September, with the aim of going straight to video (presumably sometime in 2013). Series creator Don Mancini, who has written all five of the films to date (and also directing the last entry, Seed of Chucky), has been planning a darker, more horror-centric reboot of the franchise for years, but it seems he’s decided to use that same approach for the sequel, which will reportedly eschew the increasingly campy, comedic angle of the previous two films by abandoning the entire “Chucky as family man” angle altogether.

A couple more limited-release horror movies have been added to the summer slate, both of which seem promising:
- Rites of Spring: The Signal stars AJ Bowen and Anessa Ramsey reunite in the story of kidnappers who find that their hiding place is in the hunting ground for a murderous creature. It hits both theaters and video-on-demand on July 27.
- The Awakening: Fans of The Woman in Black might want to take note of this, another period British ghost movie -- this one set in the 1920s and starring Rebecca Hall (The Prestige, The Town) as a skeptic who has written a book about debunking the supernatural. Her beliefs (or lack thereof), however, are put to the test when a teacher, played by Dominic West (The Wire, 300), asks her to investigate rumors of the ghost of a recently deceased student haunting his all-boys boarding school. It hits theaters on August 10.
