Horror Movie Remakes Roundup: Shivers, Island of Dr. Moreau, Patrick

Another week, another group of horror movie remakes. Here's the latest:

• Shivers: David Cronenberg's jarring feature film debut is being remade with a relatively little-known director from Denmark (Rie Rasmussen) behind the camera and a script from the writer of...Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter? There's no cast yet, but producers are aiming to start shooting in February. I can see why this remake would be an appealing idea; the original is low budget and has a dated '70s look, plus the concept of a sexually transmitted parasite could have new resonance in the age of AIDS, but when it comes to "body horror," it's hard to top Cronenberg. 
• The Island of Dr. Moreau: I doubt anyone would complain about another remake of The Island Of Dr. Moreau ruining the memory of the unintentionally campy 1996 version that starred Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer, so to news that Warner Brothers has hired the writers of Hemlock Grove to pen a script, I say wholeheartedly, "Sure, why not?"

• Shivers: David Cronenberg’s jarring feature film debut is being remade with a relatively little-known director from Denmark (Rie Rasmussen) behind the camera and a script from the writer of…Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter? Insidious: Chapter 2 Scares Up Record Opening

Although it was predicted to top the box office charts this past weekend, Insidious: Chapter 2 still managed to exceed expectations by scoring the biggest September horror opening of all time and the second-biggest September opening for any genre (trailing only Hotel Transylvania‘s $42.5 million), with an estimated $41 million. That’s light years ahead of Insidious‘ $13.3 million opening in 2011 and about on par with director James Wan’s The Conjuring, which opened with $41.9 million in July. Wan is now only the second director ever with two $40 million-plus debuts in one calendar year — the other being the Wachowskis, who released the second and third Matrix movies in 2003.

FX Developing American Psycho TV Show

Dexter might not be around for much longer, but there will be plenty of serial killers headlining TV shows for the foreseeable future, including Hannibal, Bates Motel, The Following and…American Psycho?
