Insidious: Chapter 2 Scares Up Record Opening

Although it was predicted to top the box office charts this past weekend, Insidious: Chapter 2 still managed to exceed expectations by scoring the biggest September horror opening of all time and the second-biggest September opening for any genre (trailing only Hotel Transylvania‘s $42.5 million), with an estimated $41 million. That’s light years ahead of Insidious‘ $13.3 million opening in 2011 and about on par with director James Wan’s The Conjuring, which opened with $41.9 million in July. Wan is now only the second director ever with two $40 million-plus debuts in one calendar year — the other being the Wachowskis, who released the second and third Matrix movies in 2003.
