A film adaptation of Stephen King’s 2006 novel Cell, which once had Eli Roth (Cabin Fever, Hostel) attached to direct but has had little movement since Roth dropped out in 2009, has taken a big leap towards fruition with the announcement that John Cusack has signed on to star. No director has been named yet, but Cusack will re-team with producer Richard Saperstein, with whom he worked on the successful King adaptation 1408. Also producing are genre veterans Brian Witten (Final Destination, Friday the 13th, Chernobyl Diaries) and Shara Kay (Mother’s Day, Silent Night). King himself wrote the screenplay, along with Adam Alleca (The Last House on the Left). I haven’t read the book, but it will be interesting to see how the story — about a mysterious “pulse” emitted through cell phones that turns listeners into zombie-like homicidal maniacs — compares to the similarly plotted The Signal.
