Throughout his long career, actor Richard Dreyfuss has performed a great number of iconic roles, from the young ichthyologist in "Jaws" to the unwitting host of extraterrestrials in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and the kindly composer-teacher in the title role of "Mr. Holland's Opus." This weekend, Dreyfuss, taking on another timeless role, appears in a live performance as the narrator of Sergei Prokofiev's classic "Peter and the Wolf."

A few weeks ago, I drove three hours to reach a screening of the restored print of George Romero's classic black and white zombie film. Sitting in the multiplex theater, I tried to put myself back in the mindset of someone seeing it fresh as the main characters, Barbara and her unnamed brother, find themselves in a cemetery.

The newest heist thriller "Widows" was released Nov. 16 to rave reviews, garnering a 94 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Set in contemporary Chicago amidst a time of political turmoil, the film follows four women as they try to pull off a robbery in the wake of their husbands' murders.

Would George Romero's Night of the Living Dead be the cultural icon it is if Ben had been played by a white man? In researching the history of horror films for another project, a clear answer appeared: no, it would not. The racial subtext of the group dynamics within the film that continues to be subject to significant critical attention, the infuriating continued relevance of the film's famous conclusion, in which Ben, the lone survivor, is shot and killed by the armed posse that should have been his salvation-all of this would disappear if the role of Ben had gone to a white actor instead of Duane Jones .

Despite all the ranting and raving about the Saw franchise being "torture porn", I enjoyed the first three movies quite a bit.
