We’re in for devilish times at the box office, with a pair of Satan-themed limited releases hitting theaters later this month: The House of the Devil (October 30), about a baby sitter who falls prey to satanists, and Antichrist (October 23), the controversial film about…um, well, when you figure it out, you can let me know. In the meantime, check out these pics from The House of the Devil and Antichrist.

Although Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes production company has apparently given up on making another Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie, the franchise is far from dead. Twisted Pictures, the company behind the Saw series, is taking over production duties and is planning on continuing the Texan cannibal storyline — not seen since 2006’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning — with a 3-D film to be written by Stephen Susco (The Grudge, Red). And things don’t stop there; the Twisted deal (with distribution through Lionsgate) reportedly is for “multiple films,” meaning the series might have to branch out in order to avoid repetition. Can you say Saw crossover? (Actually, I hope you can’t.)

Well, the first Children of the Corn remake will give remake haters plenty of fodder for their protests. We can only hope the second remake will turn out better. Read more in my review of Children of the Corn.

EC Comics (Entertaining Comics) were all published from the late 1940s until around 1956, when the Comics Code Authority whitewashed all comic books to remove all themes of horror and violence. Psychiatrist Fredric Wertham and Senator Estes Kefauver's Committee on Juvenile Delinquency attacked horror comics as causes of the rise in juvenile delinquency and crimes by minors. These comic books were accused of having no redeeming value to society and were effectively banned by the actions of these groups in creating the Comics Code. EC Comics were superior to other comics of the 1950s because of a higher quality of writing and artwork, and they were widely imitated by other comics publishers. The subject matter for EC Comics were horror, science fiction/fantasy, crime stories, war stories, and stories with a social message that generally had a twist or "shock" ending. This volume reprints the first six complete issues (24 stories) of the comic book The Vault of Horror, originally published in 1950 and 1951, and features classic horror stories of vampires, werewolves, ghouls, and monsters in the vein of the early Dracula, Frankenstein, and Wolf Man movies.

SCARED! How to Draw Fantastic Horror Comic Characters is a response to the rise in interest in the horror genre in film, comics, and graphic novels. Readers are given a brief history of horror comics-like EC, Vertigo, and DC Comics-and the influence of legendary horror genre artist Bernie Wrightson, before all manner of horror creatures are unleashed. In-depth step-by-step instructions are provided for drawing such horror subgenres as Bring on the Monsters (werewolves, wolfman, and teenage werewolf); Love at First Bite (vampires, vampire bats, and vampire slayers); Up From the Depths (killer sharks, piranhas, and the swamp and its inhabitants); and Some Things Are Best Left Buried (the crypt, the mummy, and the ancient curse).
