Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance Misfires at the Box Office

Exactly five years after Ghost Rider hit theaters on Presidents’ Day weekend 2007, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance opened wide over the same holiday period this year and earned only about half of what the first movie did. That’s still a respectable $22 million — good enough for third place this past weekend — but decidedly middle-of-the-road as far as comic book adaptations (on par with Hellboy and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen), even with elevated 3-D ticket prices. The good news for the sequel is that its production budget was only about half of Ghost Rider, so it should still manage to earn a healthy profit, particularly when the international receipts come in.
