Confirmed: Dexter Season 8 Will Be Its Last

Since Showtime renewed Dexter for two more seasons two years ago, it’s been widely assumed that the upcoming Season 8 would be the final one for the acclaimed serial killer drama. And now, to almost no one’s surprise, that assumption has come to fruition. Showtime has confirmed that the series is ending its run this summer — or rather, early fall, given the June 30 premiere means the show will likely finish up in late September or early October. Unlike most shows, Dexter will be going out at or near its peak: Season 7 was its highest rated to date, with the season finale bringing in the most viewers the show has ever had. Although I enjoy Dexter, I think it’s at a good stopping point, and kudos to the suits at Showtime for not extending it unnecessarily just because its ratings have been strong.
