Given upcoming remakes of The Wolf Man and Creature from the Black Lagoon, it should come as no surprise that another Universal monster movie classic, Bride of Frankenstein, has been tapped for a remake. Neil Burger (The Illusionist) is in talks to both write and direct the remake of the sequel, which many believe to be superior to the first Frankenstein film.
I’m a bit skeptical of the remake’s appeal, though, for a number of reasons:
- The story is less known and beloved than some of the other Universal monster movies.
- The original is actually pretty campy, aided by the decision to have the monster talk.
- It seems odd to remake a sequel without remaking the original.
- The story isn’t a traditional horror tale with an evil monster that must be stopped. As such, it might end up playing more like a period drama (see the 1985 pic The Bride, with Sting as Dr. Frankenstein).
- The bride appears for less than 10 minutes in the original film.
