La La Land may be headed for Academy Awards history next month , but come this Wednesday , it won't even be the best musical playing in theaters. Instead, that distinction will go to The Lure , the first feature of Polish director Agnieszka Smoczynska, and a film that, like Damien Chazelle's retro hit , focuses on two young people who find themselves torn between personal and professional desires while being seduced by the glitzy, glamorous entertainment spotlight.

On Friday, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter hits theaters; it's the sixth and reportedly final film in a series that has grossed nearly a billion bucks since its original hit theaters in 2002. Its central star, Milla Jovovich tells ABC Radio she's still surprised that that "little indie movie" became a blockbuster franchise - one in which gun-packing girl power is paramount.

It may not be known for its quality, but you can't say that the Resident Evil franchise isn't lucrative. Despite consistently poor reviews , the franchise has always performed well enough at the box office to warrant a sequel, but now we've reached the last installment.

Elsewhere, 'Gold' marks the worst wide opening of Matthew McConaughey's career in a leading role; 'Hidden Figures' and 'La La Land' lead the pack of Oscar best-picture contenders enjoying a bump from nominations. Lasse Hallstrom's A Dog's Purpose came in behind expectations with a debut of $18.3 million from 3,058 theaters at the North American box office after being dogged by controversy over a leaked video showing a dog in distress on the set of the film.

"All employees, lend me your full attention" BH Tilt released a third trailer for The Belko Experiment , the indie action comedy about an office building locked down where all the employees are forced to play a game of kill-or-be-killed. We've already seen two trailers for this film previously, and it looks good, but at this point I don't need to see more footage.
