There are caves carved in canyons, sheer cliffs, twisting trails and craggy peaks, all of it barely more than a mile from the freeway but seemingly a world a way. That's what makes the rugged, mountainous Griffith Park so appealing to filmmakers - it's been home to the Bat Cave, a hiding place for Kevin McCarthy and Dana Wynter in the original "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," a Klingon penal colony in the Star Trek series.

Jim Harrison, the fiction writer, poet, outdoorsman and reveler who wrote with gruff affection for the country's landscape and rural life and enjoyed mainstream success in middle age with his historical saga "Legends of the Fall," has died at age 78. Spokeswoman Deb Seager of Grove Atlantic, Harrison's publisher, told The Associated Press that Harrison died Saturday at his home in Patagonia, Arizona. Seager did not know the cause of death.

Actor Terence Stamp answered audience questions on Aug. 2 before a screening of "Poor Cow," the opening night film of the Ken Loach film series at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Stamp will return to BAM, 30 Lafayette Ave. at Ashland Place, for more questions on Aug. 14 after the 6:50 pm screening of William Wyler's 1965 psychological thriller "The Collector."

Marc Shaiman and his partner Lou Mirabal were married today, at the end of Lieutenant Commander Mirabal's retirement ceremony, honoring his more than 20 years of service to our country. The wedding was officiated by Tom Kirdahy in New Jersey.

People forget that Vincent Price was cast as a heartthrob in the excellent 1940's film noir, Laura, but most of us remember him for his horror movies. One of his bigger hits was a William Castle production called 'House on Haunted Hill .'

Australian actress Melissa George didn't have to wait long for her first celebrity encounter when she arrived in Hollywood. The Amityville Horror star met her acting hero Jennifer Jason Leigh in a parking garage on her first day and then walked in on rocker Courtney Love peeing that night.
