Poltergeist’s’ Pioneering Technophobia

The Steven Spielberg-shepherded 1982 cult classic is getting the remake treatment, and its anti-tech message is even more relevant today. Utter the word "Poltergeist" around people of a certain age and it will induce Proustian flashbacks to the film's signature sight: that of a cherubic young girl making contact with the undead via a television screen, a fantastical encounter that leads the kid, blonde-haired Carol Anne , to famously proclaim, "They're heeere ."

A reboot of the iconic 1982 released Tobe Hooper's Poltergeist , this film with the same name is a far cry from the original, a classic that was created by Steven Speilberg, Michael Grais and Mark Victor The original was a cleverly crafted scary film. It indulgently messed with the Freeling family's personal comforts - their TV, their toys, the big tree in their backyard and in the process drove a sardonic skewer into the heart of the audience of that time.

Kubrick's daughter, Vivian, who was 17 years old when the movie was being made, made a short movie documenting the making of one of her father's signature films. In addition to "The Shining," Kubrick, who died in 1999, directed "Spartacus," "Dr. Strangelove," "2001: A Space Odyssey," "A Clockwork Orange," and "Full Metal Jacket."

Giger, the brilliant and haunting genius who created the creature in Alien , a cinematic monster that would go on to terrorize audiences for decades and is about to once more in a new sequel directed by Neill Blomkamp with Sigourney Weaver returning as ultra badass, Ripley.
