This Friday sees the release of Open Road Films' The Gunman , the latest from Taken and From Paris with Love helmer Pierre Morel. This time, Morel is directing two-time Academy Award winner Sean Penn in an adaptation of Jean-Patrick Manchette's 1981 novel "The Prone Gunman" alongside a supporting cast that includes Oscar winner Javier Bardem , Ray Winstone , Idris Elba , Jasmine Trinca and Mark Rylance .

Film veteran Lord Attenborough, who dominated the British film business for more than half a century, died last August at the age of 90. The service of thanksgiving in Westminster Abbey, central London, is expected to be attended by his brother, TV wildlife presenter Sir David Attenborough; Sir Ben Kingsley, the star of Gandhi - which Attenborough directed - and actor Tom Hiddleston. A host of politicians, Hollywood stars and industry leaders reflected on the life and times of Lord Attenborough after his death last year.

The triggerman in the Pamela Smart murder trial was granted parole Thursday, nearly 25 years after he killed his school instructor's husband and launched a global spectacle packed with lurid details of sex and manipulation. William Flynn was 16-year-old "Billy" in 1990 when he and three teenage friends carried out what prosecutors said was Pamela Smart's plot to murder Gregg Smart.

At age 54, it's easy to assume that Penn, as a rogue ex-special forces officer, is drifting into territory that Liam Neeson claimed just a few years ago with a series of action-heavy box office hits.
