Chicago has spent the last couple weeks preparing for Halloween, and there have been no shortage of horror movies on the city's repertory schedule, but aside from one or two exceptions, locally shot and produced offerings have been absent. Plenty of great films have been shot and set in Chicago, and horror films are no exception.

I think it's pretty safe to say that "The Walking Dead" wouldn't be "The Walking Dead" without Greg Nicotero, a guy who was quite frankly born and bred to bring the zombies from Robert Kirkman's comic series to life on the small screen. Nicotero began his career as a special makeup effects artist, cutting his proverbial teeth on the sets of films like Day of the Dead and Evil Dead 2 , and not only is he in charge of the zombie makeup on "The Walking Dead," but he's also become an executive producer and even occasional director of the show.

It has been 60 years since a creature with large webbed hands, scaly skin and gills was captured in the Black Lagoon of the Amazon River and lugged to the Ocean Harbor Oceanarium in Florida where he was studied by an animal psychologist and an ichthyology student. Only the Black Lagoon was Wakulla Springs, Fla., the Amazon River was the St. Johns River and the Ocean Harbor Oceanarium was Marineland.

The spirit of Stephen King may have haunted the Flint Horror Con on Saturday, with props from two films based on the author's work on display. Hundreds of fans at the Flint Horror Con were able to see the big green mask from the film "Maximum Overdrive," and the star car, a 1957 Fury, from the film "Christine."
